OUR VISION FOR A CLIMATE CARING FUTURE:
The fight against climate change is humankind’s most important environmental challenge. That is why in the context of Beiersdorf, our mother company, Labello follows ambitious climate targets that are in line with the latest climate science. These targets not only cover the significant reduction of CO2e emissions at our production sites, but also extend to the indirect emissions associated with our overall value chain such as the ingredients and packaging materials we use for our Labello products.

What is CO2e? Carbon dioxide equivalent or CO2e is a standard unit for measuring carbon footprints. The idea is to express the impact of each different Greenhouse Gas (such as methane, nitrous oxide, etc.) in terms of the amount of CO2 that would create the same amount of global warming. CO2e is used for emissions measuring and reporting.
HOW DOES LABELLO DEVELOP CLIMATE-FRIENDLIER LIP CARE PRODUCTS?
The first step towards developing climate-friendlier lip care products is to understand what are the main CO2e emission drivers. Based on that, we define concrete measures to reduce our products’ CO2e footprint. Examples of our efforts include reducing the use of fossil-based virgin plastic in our packaging and the use of natural and renewable ingredients in our formulas.
What are fossil-based virgin plastics? Why should we reduce their consumption? Fossil-based virgin plastics are polymers produced from petrochemical feedstocks, such as natural gas or crude oil, which have never been used or processed before. The process of extracting and transporting those fuels, then manufacturing virgin plastic items, creates billions of tons of greenhouse gases and when the plastic waste is not well managed, it pollutes the environment. By using recycled plastics, we give these valuable materials a longer life and make sure we keep them in the loop striving for a circular economy.
BEYOND REDUCTION: 100% climate-neutralized products
We reduce significantly the CO2e emissions of our products by addressing our formulas, packaging and supply chain processes, but there will be always remaining emissions, so we go one step further: in addition to reducing the CO2e-footprint, Labello is balancing the remaining emissions of your favorite products through certified climate projects, making them 100% climate-neutralized products.
Why “climate neutralized” and not “climate neutral”? We want to be honest and transparent, therefore we do not use the term “climate neutral”, instead we use “climate neutralized”, to avoid that you think that our products are completely free of emissions.
CLIMATE PROJECTS
In terms of the certified climate projects, we only invest in projects which support natural CO2 absorption, for example through afforestation. To ensure that our positive impact is real, measurable and permanent, we work with expert organizations and third-party verifications which follow international standards, such as the Verified Carbon Standard (VCS) and the Gold Standard.
SUSTAINABLE GRASSLAND MANAGEMENT IN NORTHERN KENYA
Carbon is not only stored in forests all around the world, but also in healthy soils, which take up water and become the basis for thriving vegetation and habitats for countless species. However, this natural balance is disturbed when land is used continuously and in an unrestricted way for grazing of livestock. This is where our climate project across 2 million hectares in Northern Kenya starts. By establishing more sustainable, rotating grazing practices, the soil has time to recover and remains healthy. A small change with significant effects for climate protection and the wellbeing of local communities: Through more carbon stored in the soil, the land can also store more water through dry periods, which will in turn help local communities to address the effects of climate change and drought.
From a biodiversity perspective, improved grassland and better-quality grazing will also lead to healthier livestock and ecosystems, as well as habitats for the local wildlife, which includes four endemic endangered species – the Eastern black rhino, Gravy's zebra, the Reticulated giraffe and the Beisa oryx.
In terms of livelihoods for the local communities, the funding of this project will help diversify community income, employing staff, buying supplies and supporting specific needs of the conservancies it is implemented in – including clean water, education, and infrastructure projects such as school dormitories, housing for teachers, providing water infrastructure, building and maintaining healthcare facilities.

WHAT DO WE MEAN BY NATURAL ORIGIN INGREDIENTS?
Ingredients of natural origin, or naturally derived ingredients, are made of materials from nature like plants or minerals. Some of them are quite familiar, such as aloe vera. But others may surprise you, such as benzyl alcohol, a natural preservative produced by several plants. Since the natural materials are further processed, we speak about ingredients of “natural origin” instead of natural ingredients. These ingredients retain more than half of their molecular structure or natural state after processing. Over the years we have transitioned from mineral oils to more natural and renewable ingredients in our product formulations. At the same time, we carefully evaluate their performance, as well as their environmental impact.
ETHICALLY SOURCED SHEA BUTTER
We only use ethically sourced shea butter, and our mother company Beiersdorf is a member of the Global Shea Alliance. Therefore, we support the improvements of livelihoods of rural African women and their communities. The Global Shea Alliance is a non-profit industry association with 663 members from 38 countries including women's groups, brands and retailers, suppliers and NGOs. Through public-private partnership, the GSA promotes industry sustainability, quality practices and standards, and demand for shea in food and cosmetics.

Every big step in life requires long and hard work.
That´s why we started our sustainability journey a long time ago.
We are proud to announce that from August 2023 on, all these changes will be gradually implemented and adapted to our whole lip care assortment worldwide.
